I went to a Star Trek convention in 1972, and Gene Roddenberry was there as a special guest, carrying two 16mm film cans under his arm. One was the blooper reel, and he other was the black and white work print of The Cage. In those days, seeing such a thing was quite a revelation. And BTW, he was a very nice, humble, even shy fellow. Very friendly to this certain teenager's rambling 10-minute chat. A real gentleman.

I've seen the original "unaired" version of "The Cage" on a "collector's tape", and the "official" version released on VHS. I still haven't seen a copy, though, where "The Keeper"'s original voice is heard throughout the episode- when Malachi Throne, the original voice used in the role, appeared in "The Menagerie" as "Commodore Mendez", "The Keeper's" voice in the original footage had to be altered (electronically, so that it sounded nothing like Throne's). In the black & white and "restored color" versions I've seen, "The Keeper"'s original voice is heard in only those sections that were edited from of the final version seen on NBC {i.e., when The Keeper discusses "Number One" as a possible mate for Captain Pike instead of Vina, he adds, "She often has fantasies involving you". This line was unacceptable to the network, and was discarded. But Throne's voice is heard saying that dialogue in the unaired version, as is The Keeper's farewell to Pike: "She has her illusion, and you have reality. May you find your way as pleasant."}.
