DVD Tuesday: Leave It To Beaver, The Twilight Zone

Every Tuesday I take a look at obscure and/or classic television programs, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies being released on DVD. For the record I consider anything broadcast prior to 1980 to be classic or else there wouldn’t be much to discuss. The releases referred to in these posts are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada.

The release of most interest this week is one that has been available on DVD for years (and before that, on VHS). Image Entertainment is releasing The Twilight Zone: Season 1 on Blu-ray today, with a slew of bonus features. For the very first time “The Time Element,” an episode of Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse that is considered the forerunner of The Twilight Zone, is being released commercially. The set also includes 19 new audio commentaries, several interviews, 34 isolated music scores, syndicated promotional spots and more. Read the official press release for the set at TVShowsSOnDVD.com. Reviews can be found at Home Theater Forum, The Digital Bits and AVSForum.

Also out today, from Shout! Factory, is Leave it to Beaver – Season 4. The first three seasons of the series were released individually between 2005 and 2006; the complete series was released in June of this year. Shout! Factory should be commended for releasing the remaining two seasons individually those who bought the first three seasons years ago don’t have to double dip by purchasing the complete series set.
