Here’s a 60-second promotional spot for ABC’s The Farmer’s Daughter, which ran for three seasons from 1963 to 1966. The first two were broadcast in black and white while the third was seen in color (with the exception of two episodes). I’m inclined to believe that this particular spot is for the first season.
This spot is from the first season (shortly after the series began), featuring scenes from the pilot episode. A live staff announcer usually added at :54, “Friday at 9:30, 8:30 Central Time, over most of these stations”.
I can’t remember if I even watched a full episode of this series, but did watch the opening bits of a few episodes when it followed ‘The Patty Duke Show’ and then ‘Johnny Quest’.
That being said, I usually enjoyed sitcoms/dramas built around average folk going to Washington. One series that I’d love to see make some sort of DVD comeback is ‘Grandpa Goes to Washington’, an early NBC dramedy that lasted half a season and starred Mr. Jack Albertson, his first series post ‘Chico and the Man’.
CBS/Paramount Television owns “GRANDPA GOES TO WASHINGTON”- ask them, ‘DuMont’.
As for “THE FARMER’S DAUGHTER”, considering the various nights and time periods it shifted during its three-season run, I’m surprised it managed to stay on as long as it did. Two episodes (with original commercials) are currently posted on YouTube- see for yourself if it still holds up today, ‘DuMont’.
CBS Studios/CBS Home Entertainment doesn’t give a carp-I asked them about putting Slattery’s People on DVD by way of their new MOD program, an so far I haven’t got a response from them yet-no telling what ‘DuMont’ would get if he tried to ask them to put Grandpa Goes To Washington on DVD (and this was done via Facebook.)
“The Farmer’s Daughter” later aired on ABC Friday nights during the show’s 2nd season at 8:00 between Hanna-Barbera’s “Jonny Quest” and the Filmways TV version of “The Addams Family”. The Quest team flew from Fridays to Thursday nights, while “The Flintstones” rocked back to Fridays with the Rubbles as their next-cave neighbors.
That prehistoric swipe happened at the end of 1964. The Flintstones’ Christmas episode was still fun to watch, in which Fred played Santa Claus at a Macyrock department store.
“The Farmer’s Daughter” moved to Mondays in the 9:30 PM position, and filmed in color. Replacing the Barry Mann-Cynthia Weil title tune is the newer theme composed by Dave Grusin.
