DVD Tuesday: Coronado 9; Gunsmoke

Every Tuesday I take a look at obscure and/or classic television programs, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies being released on DVD. For the record I consider anything broadcast prior to 1980 to be classic or else there wouldn’t be much to discuss. The releases referred to in these posts are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada.

Out today from Timeless Media Group are two new releases featuring syndicated drama programs State Trooper and Coronado 9, both of which starred Rod Cameron. State Trooper – Season 1 features 39 episodes from the 1956-1957 season. Cameron starred as a Nevada state trooper named Rod Blake; the half-hour, black-and-white police drama ran for three seasons and 104 episodes. Coronado 9 – The Complete Series includes all 39 episodes from the 1960-1961 season. The half-hour syndicated drama saw Cameron starring as Dan Adams, a private detective working in San Diego, California. The title referred to his telephone exchange: “COronado 9.”

MPI Home Video is releasing The Honeymooners Christmas Special for the first time on DVD today. Broadcast on December 10th, 1978, this was the fourth and final ABC television special aired between 1976 and 1978. It was also the second Christmas-themed special; the first was broadcast in November of 1977 but is not available on DVD yet. Also out today from MPI is Happy Anniversary & Goodbye and What Now, Catherine Curtis, featuring a pair of Lucille Ball television specials: “Happy Anniversary & Goodbye” (broadcast November 10th, 1974) with Art Carney and Nanette Fabray, and “What Now, Catherine Curtis?” (broadcast March 30th, 1976) with Art Carney and Joseph Bologna.

Also out today from Paramount Home Video are Gunsmoke: Season Four, Volume Two and Hawaii Five-O: The Complete Tenth Season. Hawaii Five-O ran for a total of twelve seasons, so the end is in sight, while Gunsmoke, which ran for 20 seasons, has a long way to go. Shout! Factory released all six seasons of Leave It To Beaver back in June; Leave It to Beaver: Season Five can now be purchased individually. The sixth and final season will get an individual release in March of 2011. Finally, from A&E Home Video, comes Space: 1999 – The Complete Season One on Blu-ray.
