DVD Tuesday: Leave It To Beaver

Every Tuesday I take a look at obscure and/or classic television programs, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies being released on DVD. For the record I consider anything broadcast prior to 1980 to be classic or else there wouldn’t be much to discuss. The releases referred to in these posts are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada.

Out today from Shout! Factory is Leave It to Beaver – 20 Timeless Classics, a cheaply priced, 2-disc set intended for “impulse buyers” who might want to sample the series but understandably don’t want to buy the complete first season or the complete series set. It’s the only release of note for this final Tuesday of January. Earlier this month, however, Alpha Video issued three new single disc releases that I failed to mention: The Adventures of Dante, featuring four episodes of Four Star Playhouse starring Dick Powell; Golden Age Theater, Volume 11, featuring four episodes from Four Star Playhouse; and Big Screen Actresses on Television, featuring episodes of Four Star Playhouse and Telephone Time starring the likes of Joanne Woodward and Fay Wray.

  1. “TELEPHONE TIME” was shown in syndication as “STAR THEATER”- I wonder if Alpha Video’s prints are from that version?
