DVD Tuesday: Treasury Men in Action, The Kent Chronicles

Every Tuesday I take a look at obscure and/or classic television programs, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies being released on DVD or Blu-ray. For the record I consider anything broadcast prior to 1980 to be classic or else there wouldn't be much to discuss. The releases referred to in these posts are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada.

Out today from Film Chest Media Group is Federal Men - 3 Disc Collector's Set, which contains 16 half-hour episodes of ABC's Treasury Men in Action, which ran from 1950-1955 and was later syndicated under the title Federal Men. The live anthology series was based on actual case files of the United States Treasury Department. It was hosted by Walter Greaza, who assigned cases to various guest stars each week. Why this set is being released under the Federal Men title, and whether the episodes will feature that title on the opening credits, is unknown but it could be due to pesky copyright issues.

Also out today from Acorn Media is The Kent Chronicles, a 3-disc set collecting three miniseries from the late 1970s based on the first three books in John Jakes' Kent Family Chronicles series (also known as the American Bicentennial Series). All three miniseries were broadcast in first-run syndication as part of Operation Prime Time, a venture launched in 1976 to provide network quality programming to independent stations. The three miniseries are: The Bastard (originally broadcast on May 22nd and May 23rd, 1978), The Rebels (originally broadcast May 14th and May 21st, 1979) and The Seekers (originally broadcast December 3rd and 4th, 1979).

    Sherman Hemsley (1938-2012)

Actor Sherman Hemsley, best known for playing George Jefferson on All in the Family and its spin-off The Jeffersons, passed away today at the age of 74. Hemsley first played George Jefferson in a 1973 episode of All in the Family, during that show's fourth season, and would ultimately make more than a dozen appearances on the show before The Jeffersons premiered in January of 1975. He would return to All in the Family twice, once in 1975 and again in 1978. The Jeffersons went off the air following the 1984-1985 season but Hemsley was soon back on television, starring in Amen, which ran from 1986 to 1991. Over the years, Hemsley would reprise his famous role of George Jefferson, most recently in a 2001 episode of House of Payne.

Here's a promotional spot for the series premiere of The Jeffersons:

Hemsley was interviewed in 2003 for the Archive of American Television. Obituaries can be found at Variety and The New York Times.

DVD Tuesday: The Untouchables, The Real McCoys

Every Tuesday I take a look at obscure and/or classic television programs, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies being released on DVD or Blu-ray. For the record I consider anything broadcast prior to 1980 to be classic or else there wouldn't be much to discuss. The releases referred to in these posts are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada.

Out today from CBS DVD/Paramount Home Entertainment is the fourth and final season of The Untouchables, split across two half-season sets: Volume 1 includes the first 14 episodes from the 1962-1963 season with the remaining 16 on Volume 2. Also out today, from Inception Media Group, is The Real McCoys - Complete Season #1. This is a re-release; the first four seasons of The Real McCoy (which ran for six seasons from 1957 to 1963) were originally released on DVD between 2007 and 2010 Falcon Picture Group. The final two seasons have yet to find their way to DVD. However, Inception plans to release a boxed set containing all six seasons of The Real McCoys in September. No word yet on whether Seasons Two-Four will be re-released or if Seasons Five-Six will be released individually for those who already own the first four seasons.

DVD Tuesday: Dark Shadows, Doctor Who

Every Tuesday I take a look at obscure and/or classic television programs, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies being released on DVD or Blu-ray. For the record I consider anything broadcast prior to 1980 to be classic or else there wouldn't be much to discuss. The releases referred to in these posts are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada.

Out today from MPI is the regular version of Dark Shadows - The Complete Original Series. A special limited edition, which included an autographed postcard from Jonathan Frid (who played Barbabas Collins), was released in April. Aside from the postcard and the limited edition number, the two sets are identical. Both come in a coffin-shaped box, include 131 DVDs and run for an incredible 457 (not counting bonus features). The limited edition set reportedly sold out immediately, although Amazon.com currently has six copies of the limited edition for sale at $749.99 versus $431.99 for the normal version, which Amazon is referring to as the "deluxe" edition.

Also out today from BBC Home Entertainment are two more Doctor Who serials: "The Krotons" (Story #47, 1968-1969, Patrick Troughton as The Doctor) and "Death to the Daleks" (Story #72, 1974, Jon Pertwee as The Doctor).
