DVD Tuesday: Dark Shadows; Doctor Who

Every Tuesday I take a look at obscure and/or classic television programs, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies being released on DVD or Blu-ray. For the record I consider anything broadcast prior to 1980 to be classic or else there wouldn’t be much to discuss. The releases referred to in these posts are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada.

Out today from MPI is the regular version of Dark Shadows – The Complete Original Series. A special limited edition, which included an autographed postcard from Jonathan Frid (who played Barbabas Collins), was released in April. Aside from the postcard and the limited edition number, the two sets are identical. Both come in a coffin-shaped box, include 131 DVDs and run for an incredible 457 (not counting bonus features). The limited edition set reportedly sold out immediately, although Amazon.com currently has six copies of the limited edition for sale at $749.99 versus $431.99 for the normal version, which Amazon is referring to as the “deluxe” edition.

Also out today from BBC Home Entertainment are two more Doctor Who serials: “The Krotons” (Story #47, 1968-1969, Patrick Troughton as The Doctor) and “Death to the Daleks” (Story #72, 1974, Jon Pertwee as The Doctor).
