DVD Tuesday: Born Free; 87th Precinct; Carol Burnett Show; The Rookies

Every Tuesday I take a look at obscure and/or classic television programs, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies being released on DVD. For the record I consider anything broadcast prior to 1980 to be classic or else there wouldn’t be much to discuss. The releases referred to in these posts are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada.

I apologize for being a day late with this week’s DVD Tuesday post.

There are a number of releases out today of interest to fans of classic television, including a real obscurity. Sony is releasing Born Free – The Complete Series, which ran for 13 episodes during the 1974-1975 season, via its manufacture-on-demand program. The 3-disc set is only available online (you can find it at Amazon via CreateSpace and at WBShop via Warner Archive). It is one of those shows I’m sure nobody expected to come out on DVD but here it is. Also out today, from Timeless Media Group, is 87th Precinct – The Complete Series, with all 30 black-and-white episodes of the NBC drama that ran during the 1961-1962 season.

More than five years, Sony released the first season of The Rookies on DVD. Today, Shout! Factory is releasing The Rookies – The Complete 2nd Season on DVD, with all 23 episodes from the 1973-1974 season. The series ran for a total of four seasons and it remains to be seen whether Shout! will bring the last two to DVD as well. From Paramount comes Gunsmoke – The Sixth Season, Volume 1, with the first 19 episodes from the 1960-1961 season. Shout! also has Dennis the Menace – 20 Timeless Episodes out today, a 2-disc collection containing 20 episodes culled from the sitcom’s four seasons.

Finally, yesterday (August 6th) Time Life released The Carol Burnett Show – The Ultimate Collection, which is only available through Time Life. It includes 50 uncut episodes from the show’s 11 seasons plus 20 hours of bonus features. You can find a complete list of contents at the Time Life website.
