New Classic TV Digital Network Launching January 1st

A new classic TV digital network is coming. NBCUniversal is getting into the classic television game next year, launching Cozi TV on its NBC Owned Television Stations, replacing the existing digital subchannel NBC Nonstop. According to Sitcoms Online, programming will include The Lucy Show, Charlie’s Angels, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Alias Smith and Jones and Marcus Welby, M.D.. Cozi TV joins cable channels Cloo (formerly Sleuth) and Syfy (formerly Sci-Fi Channel) as NBCUniversal properties with terrible names. It also joins a number of established classic television digital specialty networks, including Me-TV, Antenna TV and RTV, which are primarily available as digital subchannels but also show up on certain cable systems.

There’s already programming overlap between some of these networks, and between some of these networks and TV Land. Just how many can the market bear? On the one hand, there are more than 1,000 commercial television stations potentially in need of digital subchannels. On the other hand, the viewer base for classic television may not be large enough to support so many options, particular with so many of the programs available on DVD or online through Hulu or Netflix. Can even the largest markets accommodate two of these digital specialty networks?

  1. Let’s face it- “NBC Nonstop”, as it is now, is an endless series of repeats of LX-TV’s “lifestyle” series, “CASH CAB”, and “infomercials”. ANYTHING would be an improvement over that format!
