The Munsters CBS Promo

Here’s a CBS network promotional spot for The Munsters (“Thursdays on most of these stations”) that would have been used to promote the show’s second season, which ran during the 1965-1966 season.

  1. For a season-and-a-half, “The Munsters” was a highly-rated show.

It was so popular, in fact, that the producers decided to make a feature-film version (“Munster, Go Home!”) after filing of Season Two finished, which would be released to theatres just before Season Three hit the air in the fall of 1966.

But ABC slotted “Batman” head-to-head against “Munsters” in January, 1966. “Batman” was an instant hit, and the audience for “Munster” pretty much evaporated.

After filming of Season Two ended, “Munster, Go Home!” was filmed, with Debbie Watson replacing Pat Priest as Marilyn Munster (in fact,m had the series gone into a third season, Watson would have continued in that role).

One story I’ve heard—I don’t know if it’s true or not—was that CBS cancelled “Munsters” just as the cast and crew were flying back to Los Angeles after doing location filming in England for “Munster, Go Home!” and that CBS executives intercepted the cast and producers of the show when they got off their plane at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) to inform them of the show’s cancellation.
