ABC Fall 1978 Posters: Wednesday

To promote its Fall 1978 line-up ABC commissioned a series of seven posters–one for each night of the week–depicting characters from its new and returning shows. Check back every day this week for a look at one of these posters. Today we’ll examine the Wednesday poster.

Wednesday on ABC in the fall of 1978 featured three hour-long dramas

  8:00PM Eight is Enough
  9:00PM Charlie’s Angels
10:00PM Vega$ (New)

The network staggered the premieres of these three shows. Eight is Enough started its third season on September 6th. On September 13th, the third season of Charlie’s Angels kicked off with a special two-hour movie event that crossed over with ABC’s new drama Vega$. Then on September 20th, Vega$ made its series debut.

Here’s the ABC poster for its Wednesday lineup:

It’s a little bit cluttered but from top to bottom you’ve got Charlie’s Angels, Vega$, and Eight is Enough. I’m not sure whether that high-flying cyclist at the top is supposed to be from Charlie’s Angels or Vega$.

Here’s a closer look:

Farrah Fawcett-Majors famously departed from Charlie’s Angels after its first season but agreed to return for several guest appearances during the show’s third season starting in September 1978. That’s probably why she’s included here. She actually gets a better position than Cheryl Ladd, who replaced her, although unless I’m mistaken Ladd is actually on the poster twice. That’s her in a bikini above Farrah, right?

And another close-up:

Something is very off about the human pyramid made up of the Eight is Enough children. Check out the bottom row. There’s a huge gap behind Betty Buckley, one that physically doesn’t seem possible. Given that two of the children in the middle row are completely blocked by Buckley, it’s curious that the bottom row was stretched to keep all three children in view.

Check back tomorrow for a look at the Thursday poster.

  1. “I’m not sure whether that high-flying cyclist at the top is supposed to be from Charlie’s Angels or Vega$.”

It’s a shot from the Vega$ opening credits which includes the nondescript show girl on the right of Tony Curtis.

At first I thought FONZ was jumping from the Tuesday to Wednesday poster.

Yes, it’s Cheryl. This shot was also feature in CA’s opening credits.

  2. Any caricature artist at an amusement park could have drawn a more accurate picture of Dick Van Patten. This artist must be the same one who drew Tom Brady!
