August 2016: The Month in Home Media

The Month in Home Media is a monthly column highlighting short-lived or rare television series, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies released on DVD or Blu-ray during the previous month, as well as recent additions to streaming services like Warner Archive Instant. The releases discussed in this column are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada. The Month in Home Media is published on the first Thursday of each month.

August 2016 was a very quiet month. A recent obscurity (Cashmere Mafia) was re-released on DVD while two other recent obscurities (Harper’s Island and Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior) were added to Hulu. Alpha Video released several public domain titles as well.

DVD/Blu-ray Releases

Cashmere Mafia: The Complete Series (TV Series, Mill Creek, DVD)
Only seven episodes of this series aired on ABC between January and February 2008. Lucy Liu, Frances O’Connor, Miranda Otto, Bonnie Somerville starred. It was released on DVD by Sony in September 2008 but that set has been discontinued. So, Mill Creek Entertainment has re-released the series. It’s unclear whether this new set includes the four featurettes from the Sony set.

Alpha Video released several new manufacture-on-demand titles last month, including Cross Current Volume 2, Overseas Adventure Volume 2, Crossroads Volume 5, Boston Blackie Volume 4, Big Town Volume 2, and Sheriff of Cochise Volume 5.

DVD/Blu-ray News

As I reported earlier this month, The Monroes (ABC, 1966-1967) will be released on DVD by Shout! Factory on September 6th. At least initially, it will be a Walmart exclusive but presumably will be available at other retailers at some point.

Alpha Video will offer additional episodes of Code 3, Climax, and Brave Eagle for sale on September 27th. The company will also release episodes of Calvin and the Colonel (ABC, 1961-1962) that same day (Oldies.com).

Streaming

A pair of short-lived CBS dramas were added to Hulu last month: Harper’s Island (2009) and Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (2011). Both ran for just 13 episodes and both have also been released on DVD.

Also, Yancy Derringer (CBS, 1958-1959) is now available for streaming via Amazon Prime. The half-hour Western was released on DVD in 2011.
