The Month in Home Media is a monthly column highlighting short-lived or rare television series, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies released on DVD or Blu-ray during the previous month, as well as recent additions to streaming services like Warner Archive Instant. February 2017 saw the first season of How to Marry a Millionaire finally released on DVD. A pair of recent short-lived NBC shows (Marry Me and The Player) also came out on DVD. And Mr. Lucky (CBS, 1959-1960) started streaming on Amazon Prime last month.

How to Marry a Millionaire: Season 1 (TV Season, CBS, DVD)
Last October, news broke that CBS Home Entertainment planned to release both seasons of How to Marry a Millionaire on DVD. A 5-disc Season 1 set is now available through Amazon. During its first season, How to Marry a Millionaire starred Lori Nelson, Merry Anders, and Barbara Eden. The first season ran from October 1957 to July 1958 on the NTA Film Network. Both Season 2 and a Complete Series bundle are available for pre-order, with no release dates set. NOTE: This is a manufactured on demand release.

Marry Me: Season 1 (TV Series, Sony, DVD)
This short-lived sitcom aired for less than one season, so I don’t know why Sony is calling this release Season 1. The romantic comedy starred Casey Wilson and Ken Marino. It ran for 14 episodes on NBC during the 2014-2015 season with another four episodes left unaired. All 18 are included on this 2-disc set. NOTE: This is a manufactured on demand release.

The Player: Season 1 (TV Series, Sony, DVD)
Once again, Sony refers to this release as Season 1 even though the action series ran for just nine episodes. Wesley Snipes, Philip Winchester, Charity Wakefield, and Damon Gupton starred. The series ran on NBC during the 2015-2016 season. NOTE: This is a manufactured on demand release.

Finally, Alpha Video released several new manufactured on demand titles last month: Calvin and the Colonel Volume 3, Dateline Europe (aka Foreign Intrigue) Volume 5, and The Count of Monte Cristo Volume 6.

DVD/Blu-ray News

As I reported earlier this week, one season wonder It’s About Time (CBS, 1966-1967) is coming to DVD courtesy of ClassicFlix. So is the first season of Ziv Television’s syndicated crime drama Lock-Up (1959-1961). Release dates have yet to be announced.

If you weren’t able to watch the two colorized episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show on CBS last December, you’ll soon be able to purchase them on DVD or Blu-ray. The Dick Van Dyke Show: Now… in Living Color! contains the CBS special plus the original network versions of both episodes (“That’s My Boy??” and “Coast to Coast Big Mouth”) colorized and black and white. Both the DVD and Blu-ray will be released on March 21st (TVShowsOnDVD.com).

Streaming

One season wonder Mr. Lucky (CBS, 1959-1960) started streaming via Amazon Prime last month. John Vivyan and Ross Martin star in the half-hour adventure series. My article about Mr. Lucky can be found here.

The CW’s Frequency started streaming on Netflix last month. The sci-fi drama premiered in October 2016 and wrapped its 13-episode first season in January of this year. Extremely low ratings make it unlikely to return for a second season, but who knows.

Hulu added MyNetworkTV’s Watch Over Me last month. The telenovela ran for 66 episodes from December 2006 to March 2007. Another MyNetworkTV telenovela, Fashion House, has been available on Hulu since December 2015.

Hit the comments with any news about upcoming DVD/Blu-ray releases or additions to streaming services.

  1. Thank you for the update about “How to Marry a Millionaire.” I had pre-ordered it back when you first wrote about it. I just checked my Amazon orders, and it has not been shipped. I need to find out what is going on. If I have to re-order it, I will order via the link on this site to help support it.

    1. There’s now a review of Season 1 at Amazon, so at least some copies are shipping. If you do have to reorder it, I appreciate you supporting Television Obscurities.

      1. Amazon still lists this as a pre-order. I wonder what it going on with the release date.

      2. I just took another look, and instead of checking my previous order, which is still sitting in my cart as not shipped, I clicked on another link I saw, and was taken to a different page where it is listed as available. The price is even lower than it had been.

      3. I canceled my previous order (which I am surprised Amazon never sent once it was available), and re-ordered via the link on this site. I also ordered season two, which was available at a good price if I purchased both seasons at once. However, it appears that season two is not yet available. There appears to be various pages on Amazon for this show, and they seem to have different prices and release dates. It is rather confusing.

      4. Season one arrived today! Season two is still a pre-release, but is on order for me.

  2. I love on the packaging of ‘Calvin And The Colonel’ how it states “From the creators of Amos And Andy!’. yeah, that’ll move a few more copies.
