WNBT Schedule, Week of March 2nd, 1947

Here’s the schedule for WNBT (NBC’s flagship TV station in New York City) for the week starting Sunday, March 2nd, 1947. The New York Times published daily listings for television stations in the city, including WNBT, alongside its comprehensive radio listings.

WNBT kicked off the week with another installment of NBC Television Theater on Sunday, March 2nd. “Where There’s a Will” featured Carol Goodner, Mary Patton, Cyrilla Dorn, and Alexander Clark. On Monday, March 3rd, the station aired a special Alexander Graham Bell birthday tribute.

WNBT signed on the air on Wednesday, March 5th to show a sports film and a speech by FCC Chairman Charles R. Denny, delivered at an Institute of Radio Engineers dinner. An income tax quiz aired in place of the regular short film on Thursday, March 6th.

Of particular interest to me is the lengthy New York Herald Tribune Forum for High Schools broadcast on Saturday, March 8th. An article published the following day in the The New York Times described the forum. It featured 21 speakers ranging from Senator Irving M. Ives (R-New York) to Lester B. Pearson, Canadian Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs. Other speakers included Nelson A. Rockefeller, former Georgia governor Ellis Arnall, Pan American World Airways president Juan Trippe, test pilot Tony LeVier, and actress Ingrid Bergman.

Bergman, according to The New York Times, “defended ‘escape’ movies and said she hoped both realistic and escape types of films would be turned out.” Assuming WNBT broadcast her speech, it may well have been her first television appearance.

Some 3,600 students from 744 high schools in the NYC metropolitan area participated in the forum, which took place at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Half attended the morning session and the other half the afternoon session. A handful of students were given the opportunity to speak at the forum. Presumably, they also appeared on television. How many families gathered in homes and bars to watch their children on TV?

WNBT also aired an unidentified feature film on Saturday.

  1. The Income Tax Quiz was appropriate to the month. Tax Day was then March 15. It didn’t become April 15 until 1955.
