Audio Vault: Jackie Gleason Show Closing (11/11/1967)

Here’s audio from the closing credits to the November 11th, 1967 episode of The Jackie Gleason Show on CBS:

The Jackie Gleason Show aired Saturdays from 7:30-8:30PM ET on CBS during the 1967-1968 season. After Jackie Gleason says goodnight to viewers, the closing credits begin. First up is announcer Johnny Olson reminding viewers to tune in next week. Next is a voiceover sponsor spot for Johnson Wax, maker of Klear floor wax.

Johnny Olson returns but is cut off by a local voiceover promotional spot featuring Sandy Roberts, Miss Teenage America of 1967. She promotes both the Miss Teenage America pageant on CBS at 10PM ET and the local movie airing after the pageant on WJBK-TV/TV2. The pageant likely ended around 11:30PM ET but aired live and may have run long.

Next is a CBS network promotional spot for the conclusion of a special two-part adventure on Lassie (airing Sunday, November 12th). Then comes a brief “Stay Tuned” plug for My Three Sons. The sitcom followed The Jackie Gleason Show, airing from 8:30-9PM ET.

Here’s a transcript:

Goodnight, everybody!

Don’t forget to tune in next week for The Honeymooners starring Jackie Gleason and Art Carney.

The second half of The Jackie Gleason Show was brought to you by Johnson Wax, maker of Klear, the self-polishing floor wax that dries clear as glass and never yellows.

This is Johnny Olson–

Hi, I’m Sandy Roberts, Miss Teenage America of 1967. And tonight is Miss Teenage America night on TV2. You’ll see the pageant at 10PM and afterwards I’ll be hosting the movie It Happened to Jane and talking about my experiences and impressions as Miss Teenage America. Tonight on TV2.

Lassie’s two-part adventure reaches a peak of excitement tomorrow night when the gallant collie is left alone facing a marauding wolf. Stay tuned for comedy with My Three Sons, next.

  1. Was this film with Miss Teenage America hosting segments aired on other CBS stations or just in Detroit? I can tell you WBBM Chicago aired THE TARNISHED ANGELS as their late movie, and KDKA Pittsburgh ran EXPERIMENT IN TERROR.
(Miss Roberts was from the San Francisco area)

    1. I’m afraid I don’t know. I assume it was a local movie on WJBK-TV but it may have been regional or otherwise packaged to other stations.

  2. Thank you for providing this sound byte. Do you have the Jackie Gleason Show episode from January 17, 1970 that has the Incredible World of Ed Norton sketch? I’m looking for it. My email is [email protected].

  3. The network promo voiceover (for “Lassie” and “My Three Sons”) near the end of this clip was Pat Connell, the first African-American to have been hired as a full-time staff announcer by a major broadcast network, as CBS had done in 1961. He remained with the network (handling duties for both TV and radio, and also locally over its New York flagship WCBS-TV) through his retirement sometime in the early 1990’s. Unfortunately, his legacy has been long overshadowed by the far more prominent Fred Facey of NBC – who joined that network the same year as this clip, and was their first full-time African-American staff announcer (their next, in 1970, was Burbank-based Victor Bozeman).
