President Truman died on December 26th, 1972 at the age of 88. His funeral took place in Independence, Missouri on December 27th.

  1. Lyndon Johnson died less than a month after Truman, on January 22, 1973. Until Richard Nixon’s resignation in August of 1974, the nation had no living ex-Presidents for one of the only times in its history.

    1. I remember hearing about the US having no living ex-presidents on the news just after LBJ’s death, and that it was only the 5th or 6th time in US history that it happened. The last time it happened prior to 1973 was when former President Calvin Coolidge died in Jan. 1933, leaving President Herbert Hoover the only living president for 2 months until his term ended in March. The Constitution was amended shortly after this to change all future presidential inaugurations from Mar. 4 to Jan. 20.

  2. a terrific lead into this site//… finding live news briefs of influential events going back inifinitum/…../I have the very first broadcast of the death of john- jon- kennedy ;7 am in the heat of july 1999 was it/?… before the facts were even discovered.***.( we have been given a crock of bull via fairflied nj–air services//)) and in fact do not know all the facts to this DATE–*-want to contest that??…(..during the 1950’s and blacklisting eras / there had been so many blunders /over live goofs***and with three networks only..gosh—))–** remember the first broadcast of the OUTER LIMITS IN November 1963//… SIDNEY BLACKMUR portrayed a president kidnapped for a substitute killing/ and preceding the release of the MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE in the cinema!!– …panic and a ban on rerunning the episode was an acute concern./. so stay tuned
