Lyndon Johnson died less than a month after Truman, on January 22, 1973. Until Richard Nixon’s resignation in August of 1974, the nation had no living ex-Presidents for one of the only times in its history.
I remember hearing about the US having no living ex-presidents on the news just after LBJ’s death, and that it was only the 5th or 6th time in US history that it happened. The last time it happened prior to 1973 was when former President Calvin Coolidge died in Jan. 1933, leaving President Herbert Hoover the only living president for 2 months until his term ended in March. The Constitution was amended shortly after this to change all future presidential inaugurations from Mar. 4 to Jan. 20.
