WNBT Schedule, Week of May 4th, 1947

Here’s the schedule for WNBT (NBC’s flagship TV station in New York City) for the week starting Sunday, May 4th, 1947. The New York Times published daily listings for television stations in the city, including WNBT, alongside its comprehensive radio listings.

Viewers watching WNBT this week may not have know it, but the station ushered in the Golden Age of Television with the debut of Kraft Television Theatre on Wednesday, May 7th. The dramatic anthology series ultimately ran for 11 years. It’s unclear when the series began airing on NBC’s limited Eastern network. The first episode (“Double Door”) may not have aired outside New York City.

Also, WNBT had six six baseball games scheduled. I can’t say whether they all aired as planned.

The Sunday (May 4th) lineup began with a scheduled afternoon baseball game between the New York Giants and the Chicago Cubs. Recently introduced talk show At Home with Tex and Jinx followed at 8PM ET. NBC Television Theater aired at 8:20PM ET rather than its usual 9PM ET hour. Something called Sunday Evening Supper aired at 8:50PM.

An unidentified western film aired on Monday (May 5th), along with the regular news and boxing. Another baseball game, this one between the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Reds, was scheduled for 2:30PM on Tuesday (May 6th).

A third baseball game was scheduled for 2:30PM on Wednesday (May 8th), this on pitting the New York Giants against the St. Louis Cardinals. That night, WNBT introduced two new shows. In addition to Kraft Television Theatre at 7:30PM ET, the station also premiered In the Kelvinator Kitchen (often called simply In the Kitchen) at 8:30PM. However, some sources indicate the cooking show debuted two weeks later on May 21st.

On Thursday (May 8th), another Giants-Reds game was scheduled for 2:20PM. The regular evening lineup included news, Juvenile Jury, the unnamed variety program, You Are An Artist, and more news, with guest Frederick Woltman.

The scheduled baseball game on Friday (May 9th) saw the New York Giants take on the Pittsburgh Pirates at 2:30PM. Later, WNBT aired Campus Hoopla and more boxing.

On Saturday (May 10th), WNBT aired something called Clown Alley at 1:30PM ET. It featured circus performers. At 2:20PM, the station had a sixth baseball game scheduled. This one saw the New York Giants face the Boston Braves.

  1. Either the Times listings were way off, or that’s the wackiest baseball schedule I have ever seen!

    1. According to baseball-reference.com, this was the actual schedule for that week. There was no game against the Cubs on Sunday or the Cardinals on Wednesday. The Giants lost to the Reds on Tuesday 11-6 and then beat them on Thursday 7-4, Friday’s game had the wrong team, it was against the Boston Braves and not the Pirates. They lost 6-2 that day, but followed it on Saturday with a 2-1 win. And with all the talk about speeding up the game, the 11-6 game with the Reds lasted an hour and a half. None of the Giants’ games that year lasted 3 hours. Longest game was 8/8/47, a 10-inning 7-5 loss to Boston. It clocked in at 2:55
