Audio Vault: WRTV Commercial Break (12/25/1972)

Here’s audio from a December 25th, 1972 commercial break aired on NBC affiliate WRTV (Channel 6) in Indianapolis, Indiana:

This particular commercial break aired during Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In (8-9PM ET). Included are four commercials, a teaser for Laugh-In, and a holiday greeting from WRTV.

Here’s a transcript:

[Certs Mints Commercial] “‘If he kissed you once, will he kiss you again? Be certain with Certs.’ The candy mint that stops bad breath. Candy mint. Breath mint. Certs is two. Two. Two mints in one. Certs, with a drop of Retsyn, stops bad breath. ‘He’ll kiss you again.’ Certs mints. And now, delicious new Certs gum. The kissing gum.”

[Noxzema Commercial] “‘So X equals 37. See Robert?’ ‘Yes, thank you Miss Hennessy.’ ‘You’re welcome.’ ‘Miss Hennessy, may I ask you something? Do you use anything special on your face? You look so pretty.’ ‘No, I just wash my face every day.’ ‘With soap?’ ‘No. Noxzema medicated skin cream. It cleans and moisturizes and it seems to work for me.’ ‘Yeah. Thank you Miss Hennessy.’ ‘Thank you, Robert.’ Medicated Noxzema. The moisturizer you wash with.”

[Laugh-In Teaser] “Stay tuned for the second half of Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In and see if you can find the hidden pony. Whoopee.”

[West Bend Humidifier Commercial] “Heat from your furnace can dry up the air and furniture. But there’s a way to bring this kind of mill stream freshness into your home with a West Bend Humidifier. There are three attractively styled console models and a tabletop model. So this winter, enjoy mill stream freshness with a humidifier from West Bend. Where craftsmen still care. Your West Bend dealers are: the William H. Block Company; Vonnegut’s Hardware and Home Centers, Indianapolis; and Ball Stores, Muncie.”

[WRTV Greeting] “Happy Holidays from Channel 6.”

[Nyquil Commercial] “‘I feel miserable tonight, Sarah. I’m going to take a cold capsule.’ ‘Take Nyquil instead, Roy. That capsule’s for head colds.’ ‘Yeah, and I’ve also got a scratchy throat.’ ‘And your coughing.’ ‘And I feel achy and I need some rest.’ ‘Nyquil’s the answer.’ Vick’s Nyquil. Nighttime colds medicine. Relieves more major cold symptoms than the leading capsule for hours so it lets you get the rest you need. ‘Thanks a lot.’ ‘You’re welcome a lot.’ You get a cold tonight, put Nyquil to work.”

  1. finally an original commercial break from LAUGH-IN great commercials very good spots fit the time slot

    1. A few quick comments: [1] The 2 mints in 1 tag was a long time slogan for Certs. I remember Dick Clark promoting them on “American Bandstand.” [2] The Noxzema commercial sound like a dialogue between a teacher and her student. It might have been innocent in 1972, but today that commercial would be considered sexual harassment. [3] I believe the voice on the teaser was Ruth Buzzi as Gladys. Believe it or not, it was not uncommon until the mid-70’s for a popular series to run a new episode on Christmas.

      1. Thanks for sharing this clip. it was a lot of fun to hear an actual mid-episode break, which may not even be included on the full DVD version that’s out now.

Actually LAUGH-IN never aired an original episode on Christmas Day or during Christmas week. According to “From Beautiful Downtown Burbank”, a book all about this show, with a full episode guide of original episodes & reruns, this episode was a rerun of the episode originally broadcast on Sept. 25, 1972, and it had William Conrad, then of CANNON, as its guest star.

  2. Thanks for the correction. I was right about certain shows having fresh shows on Christmas. Usually, this was because sponsors bought out a time slot for an entire season and expected people to watch all year long. Today. with no sponsor contracts and expensive production costs, this could never happen. Yes, I am aware of the release of the full Laugh-In series. Finding the last season must have been a struggle since George Schlatter was fired by R&M and wanted that season to be destroyed.

    1. I need to correct myself now. I was looking at the episode guide again and found that there was an original Laugh-In episode on 12/20/71, as well as another new one on 12/27/71. (There were usually new episodes in the week between Christmas & New Years.)
NBC preempted a lot of Laugh-In episodes for other reasons that season, including a week off in February for the 1972 Winter Olympics, which was NBC’s last time to carry Winter Olympics coverage until 2002.

  3. That’s definitely Ruth Buzzi as Gladys Ormphby on the Laugh-In teaser. And that sounds like Lloyd Nolan as the announcer on the Nyquil commercial.
