The software I use to keep track of statistics uses “keyphrases” to describe a bunch of words that, when entered into a search engine, lead to this site. I’m not sure why one of them is a single word (it also appears in the list of most used keywords). Here are the top ten keyphrases from 2009:

tv obscurities

television

television obscurities

obscure tv shows

it s about time it s about space

the ugliest girl in town

camp runamuck

tvobscurities

baileys of balboa

great tv shows

It’s interesting that so many people use some variation of the term television obscurities. When I decided to use it as the name of this website I thought it was fairly unusual. Apparently a lot of people feel certain television programs are obscure and, luckily for me, want to know more about them. Here are some additional keyphrases I felt were interesting or unusual:

naughty bloopers

1953 singer fired on live tv

tv show main character s name is jesse eyeball follows him around

joi lansing playboy

dan haggerty beard on fire

batman tv show cowl and batgirl cowl

stephanie powers tied up

rhoda the robot

april dancer tied up

mike wallace mickey cohen

I had no idea there were so many people who want to see Stefanie Powers tied up.

When I first made the switch to WordPress in November of 2008, I decided to make a post listing the most popular articles, exhibits and video files for each month. I gave this up after three months because it was incredibly time consuming. I couldn’t help but be interested in seeing which articles were the most popular for 2009 as a whole and since I was looking over the statistics anyway I pulled together the following. First, here are the ten most popular articles from 2009:

10 Of The Most Outlandish TV Concepts Ever

Batgirl and the Batman Phenomenon

“The Outsiders”

“The New People”

W*A*L*T*E*R

Cliffhangers: “Stop Susan Williams”

“It’s About Time”

Outtakes, Bloopers & Goofs

“Mr. Lucky”

“Ferris Bueller”

I should point out that Cliffhangers: “Stop Susan Williams” is the first of a three-part article on Cliffhangers, so it is understandably seen by more people than the second and third parts. Interestingly, Cliffhangers: “The Curse of Dracula” was more popular than Cliffhangers: “The Secret Empire”, suggesting it is remembered more fondly than Cliffhangers: “The Secret Empire” (which was the only segment of Cliffhangers not to be edited into a made-for-TV movie, meaning it wasn’t syndicated for decades after the show went off the air).

As far as I can tell the least popular article is Early Networks and the East-Midwest Connection. Part of that has to do with the fact that it was published in November of 2009, making it one of the newer articles. The most popular exhibit was Famous Faces Do Commercials. The most popular video file was the Batgirl promotional short from Batgirl and the Batman Phenomenon. Finally, here are the five most popular individual posts made to the main page:

The New People, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. Articles Revised

EW’s 26 Great TV Shows That Got a Quick Hook

View Scenes from Earliest Existing Television Footage

DVD Review: Mr. Terrific – The Complete Series

Status Guide – “Night Beat”

I’m thrilled that my post about the earliest existing television footage was viewed by so many people. But I have no idea why my status guide for Night Beat proved popular with visitors.

I’ve decided to start listing the top five exhibits each month. There are currently six and by process of elimination we learn that The New People Comic Books is the least popular exhibit. I find that a little surprising. I am also surprised at how popular my latest exhibit, Computer Commercials, 1984-1994, turned out to be, ranking third this month.

There must be a lot more fans of Land of the Giants out there than I thought because a promotional spot for the series is the first post in the Video Vault to crack the top ten most popular audio/video files.

Interesting.

Ten Most Popular Videos – December 2008

Batgirl Promotional Short (Batgirl and the Batman Phenomenon)
The Final Scene From I Married Dora
Opening Credits to Mr. Lucky
Opening Credits to Cliffhangers
Promo for the Third Episode of The Outsiders
Batman Promotional Spot (Batgirl and the Batman Phenomenon)
Closing Theme to Mr. Lucky

Again, most of these were in the top ten for November as well, although last month scenes from the two unsold U.S. Red Dwarf pilots were the top two videos. I’m very interested to see that the final scene from I Married Dora and the opening credits from Cliffhangers are so popular.

Out of sheer curiosity, I looked at the least popular articles for 2008 as a whole.

*This is for the entire Midseason 1979 article. It is also available in two parts, both of which are more popular.

Obviously, the two newest articles (Coronet Blue and Television Programs in 1941) haven’t had as much time to be discovered by visitors, so they’re understandably at the bottom of the popularity ranking. And I’m the first to admit that A Brief History of Television Writers: 1949-1979 is dense and not all that interesting. But why aren’t more people interested in The Tab Hunter Show or TV Guide Promotional Spots?

I’m not sure if anyone is actually interested in this information, so consider the following an experiment. I’ve gone over the site statistics for Television Obscurities (I use AWStats) for November and pulled out some numbers that reflect the most popular articles, exhibits and videos over the course of the last month, as of 10:30PM EST.

But first, a caveat: Obviously, if another website links to a specific article at Television Obscurities and sends a huge amount of traffic to that particular article, the end results are skewed statistics. Also, because there are only five exhibits available at the moment, I am only going to show the top three.

On the flip side, it was a little unexpected to see Red Dwarf USA or Mr. Lucky so popular.

It makes a certain amount of sense that all of the most popular videos are from the most popular articles. I am a little curious, however, at the fact that only one video from The New People made it into the top ten.
