Help Identify Movie Aired on November 22nd, 1973

I received an e-mail from Bob, who is trying to identify a Western movie that he believes was broadcast on ABC, CBS or NBC in the early morning (it was on around 1AM) on Thursday, November 22nd, 1973 in Lewisburg, West Virginia.

Unfortunately, the fact that it was aired on a network affiliate doesn’t necessarily mean it was a network broadcast and that makes things more difficult. I admit to not being very knowledgeable about network late night programming which is why I’m throwing this out to the masses.

Based on television listings I’ve looked at, on Wednesday, November 21st at 11:30PM, ABC began an installment of ABC’s Wide World of Entertainment titled “JFK: A Time to Remember;” it ran until 1AM. On CBS was No Time for Sergeants, part of The CBS Late Movie, which aired from 11:30PM to 1:50AM. And NBC broadcast The Tonight Show from 11:30PM to 1AM followed by Tomorrow from 1-2AM.

Given that No Time for Sergeants cannot be called a Western, it seems that the movie Bob’s trying to identify had to have been a local broadcast that followed the aforementioned network programming. But I don’t have access to any local television listings for Lewisburg, West Virginia.

Can anyone out there help Bob find the name of this movie?

  1. This would have aired on one of the local network affiliates in the Roanoke or Bluefield-Beckley-Oak Hill markets, more likely one of the Roanoke stations. This should be listed in the Central Virginia edition of the TV Guide dated November 17, 1973. This TV Guide edition should be on fiche in any of the larger libraries in this area of Virginia and West Virginia.

  3. TV has always had a strange way of broadcasting through mountainous areas such as West Virginia; the program could have come to Lewisburg from as far away as Charleston (WCHS) or even Huntington (WSAZ,WHTN/WOWK)
