Harold Gould (1923-2010)

Actor Harold Gould, a five-time Emmy Award nominee, passed away on Saturday (September 11th) at the age of 86. Gould is perhaps best known for a pair of television roles: Martin Morgenstern on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda in the 1970s and Miles Webber on The Golden Girls in the 1980s. He received an Emmy Award nomination for an episode of Rhoda in 1978. It was the second of five nominations he would earn between 1973 and 1990. The first was for an episode of Police Story and the last for an appearance on The Ray Bradbury Theater.

Twice during his career Gould appeared in pilot episodes only to be replaced when the pilot went to series, both times as a father character. In 1966, he played Lou Marie in the unaired pilot episode of That Girl; the role was played by Lew Parker in the series proper. And in the “Love and the Happy Days” segment of the February 25th, 1972 episode of Love, American Style, Gould played Howard Cunningham, only to be replaced by Tom Bosley when Happy Days was picked up.

According to his Internet Movie Database entry, Gould’s first television role was an October 1961 episode of Cain’s Hundred. He had guest roles in dozens of shows including National Velvet, Dennis the Menace, The Twilight Zone, The Virginian, The Green Hornet, The Big Valley, Mannix, Lobo, Dallas, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and, most recently, an episode of Nip/Tuck. He starred in The Feather and Father Gang opposite Stefanie Powers on CBS in 1977.

In addition to his television work, Gould had dozens of film and stage roles, including The Sting in 1973, playing Kid Twist. Obituaries can be found at The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times.
