Here’s a promotional spot for the 13th annual Grammy Awards, which were the first to be broadcast live on television. The telecast took place on Tuesday, March 16th, 1971 on ABC. Andy Williams hosted the ceremony, which was held in Los Angeles.
That revolving Grammy is highly reminiscent of the 4:30 movie opening using the same slit-scan process seen here.
And to think that CBS is the network associated with the Grammys-go figure
CBS got the Grammys in the mid 1970’s, and ABC asked Dick Clark to produce a music awards show that would (1) compensate for the loss of the Grammys to CBS, and (2) occur earlier than the Grammys in an attempt to “steal the latter’s thunder”.
Weren’t the Grammy televised between 1958 and 1970 on tape, some weeks after the awards were handed out?
