November 2013: The Month in Home Media

The Month in Home Media is a monthly column highlighting short-lived or rare television series, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies released on DVD or Blu-ray during the previous month, as well as recent additions to streaming services like Warner Archive Instant. The releases discussed in this column are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada. The Month in Home Media is published on the first Thursday of each month.

November was a good month for obscurities on DVD, with releases relating to The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, Salvage 1, My Mother the Car and more. There were no new streaming additions during the month.

DVD/Blu-ray Releases

Perry Como’s Christmas Show (DVD, MPI Home Video)
Originally broadcast by CBS on December 17th, 1974, this Christmas special featured Perry Como and guests The Carpenters, Peggy Fleming and Rich Little. Extras include a featurette focusing on Como’s television career, hosted by Richard Carpenter; a commercial featuring Perry Como; and a clip from a 1975 special in which Como sang “Ava Marie.”

Salvage 1: Golden Orbit (DVD, Sony Pictures Entertainment)
This two-part episode of Salvage 1 originally aired on NBC in March 1979. This is the first official release of any episodes of the series on any format.

Tuesday, November 12th

The Capture of Grizzly Adams (DVD, Paramount Home Video)
This made-for-TV movie originally aired on NBC in February 1982, several years after The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams went off the air. It served as a belated finale for the series, which ran for two seasons on NBC from 1977 to 1978. This is the first DVD release for the telefilm, which was previously release on VHS.

My Mother the Car – The Series (DVD, TGG Direct)
Long considered one of the worst television series of all times, My Mother the Car has never been available on home video before (it has been available for streaming via Hulu for some time). Perhaps its legacy will be reevaluated now that it is out on DVD. The five-disc set includes all 30 color episodes originally broadcast on NBC during the 1965-1966 season.

Here’s Edie – The Edie Adams Television Collection (DVD, MVD Entertainment Group)
Included in this set are all 21 episodes of Here’s Edie/The Edie Adams Show, the variety series starring Edie Adams that aired on ABC from 1962 to 1964. Guest stars included Sid Caeser, Nancy Wilson, Allan Sherman, Buddy Hackett, Sammy Davis Jr. and more. Also included are a number of performances from various Ernie Kovacs specials as well as The Ernie Kovacs Show.

DVD/Blu-ray News

Joanie Loves Chaci, which technically ran for two seasons but I’m still going to consider an obscurity, will be released by CBS/Paramount on February 4th, 2014 (TVShowsOnDVD.com).

  1. Heard earlier today that every season of “Hill Street Blues”, which is hardly obscure so pardon the digression, will be released next spring by Shout! Factory. 34 discs in all.

  2. “THE EDIE ADAMS SHOW” originally began as a series of specials {“HERE’S EDIE”} before it became a bi-weekly series [for the same sponsor, Consolidated Cigar’s “Muriel”, of which Edie was the “celebrity endorser” of] in the fall of 1963 [alternating with “THE SID CAESAR SHOW”- who pitched Consolidated’s “Dutch Masters”], on ABC’s Thursday night schedule at 10pm(et).It wasn’t that successful….which is why only 21 half-hours were produced.
