The National Off the Wall People’s Poll Promotional Spot

This hour-long special hosted by Sarah Purcell and Liberace was broadcast on Saturday, November 24th, 1984 by NBC. It aired opposite Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer on CBS and Love Boat on ABC. Some fifty “off the wall” questions (among them “What star pays the most alimony?” and “Who is the biggest loudmouth in America?”) were posed to more than 1,000 people across the country and the results aired became “The National Off the Wall People’s Poll” [1].

The special ranked 66th in the Nielsen ratings for the week it aired, tied with ABC’s airing of the movie Arthur. The lowest-rated program that week was an episode of NBC’s Partners in Crime in the 68th spot [2].
