25th Anniversary of The Lone Gunmen

Conspriry thriller comedy drama The Lone Gunmen debuted 25 years ago today on March 4th, 2001 on FOX. A spin-off of The X-Files, it ran for only 13 episodes before the network cancelled the show due to low ratings. The Lone Gunmen starred Bruce Harwood, Tom Braidwood, and Dean Haglund as three conspiracy theorists and magazine publishers. The trio first appeared in a February 1994 episode of The X-Files during that show’s first season. Rounding out the cast were Zuleikha Robinson and Stephen Snedden.

Despite not having seen a single episode of The X-Files at the time, promotional spots for The Lone Gunmen intrigued me enough to watch the series premiere 25 years ago. Here’s one such promo:

And here are the opening credits:

The series premiere infamously featured a government conspiracy to crash an airliner into the World Trade Center, half a year before the tragic September 11 attacks. I know I watched all 13 episodes but don’t remember much else. There was an episode about smart monkeys and another involving a car that ran on water.

Although The Lone Gunmen was released on DVD in 2005, it is long out-of-print and relatively pricey secondhand. The series is not streaming anywhere but all 13 episodes are on YouTube for anyone interested.
