87th Precinct Promo

This is a promotional spot for NBC’s 87th Precinct. The crime drama ran during the 1961-1962 season on Mondays from 9-10PM. Here’s an incomplete promotional spot for the series. It runs for an unusual 46 seconds rather than the standard 60 seconds, so about 14 seconds are missing, during which NBC certainly would have been mentioned.

The music used in this promo is the same cue used towards the end of the 1965-’66 NBC Fall Preview special, “A Secret Agent’s Dilemma”. Probably the NBC staff announcer said after :46, “Mondays at 9, 8 Central Time, on NBC”. This is most likely a syndicated version of this promo, with the film spliced away before the NBC logo appeared during the last 14 seconds [in the ’60s and early ’70s, most local stations got promos directly from the networks a season after they were used nationally, allowing those stations’ film editors to snip away the network info at the end, or directly “mute” the soundtrack mentioning the network and day/time of program involved].

I actually wonder if there was more at the start of the promo. I might be reading too much into the garbled mess at the beginning but it sounds like the announcer is introducing the characters.

I think it would be interesting to find a bunch of local syndicated promos taken from the same national promotional spot. Presumably, they should all be more or less the same, but who knows, there could be a few unusual ones in the mix.
