1968 Miss America Pageant Promo Spot

Here’s an interesting if brief promotional spot for the 42nd annual Miss America Pageant, broadcast by NBC on Saturday, September 7th, 1968. The spot also promotes a special called “Johnny Carson Discovers Cypress Gardens.” What makes it interesting is that it would only have been seen on the West Coast.

Notice that the promo states the pageant will air for two hours starting at 7PM with “Johnny Carson Discovers Cypress Gardens” immediately following. The pageant was broadcast live from Atlantic City in New Jersey, so viewers in the Eastern time zone would have seen it from 10PM-12AM. The Johnny Carson special, which was not live, aired before the pageant from 9-10PM.

Viewers in the Pacific time zone, however, would indeed have watched the pageant live from 7-9PM and then “Johnny Carson Discovers Cypress Gardens” from 9-10PM.

  1. This is indeed a “West Coast” version of the promo, as the pageant aired live [in the East] at 10pm(et). NBC could have time-delayed it for the Pacific, but- at least, in those days- they had the integrity not to.
