May 2017: The Month in Home Media

The Month in Home Media is a monthly column highlighting short-lived or rare television series, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies released on DVD or Blu-ray during the previous month, as well as recent additions to streaming services like Warner Archive Instant. The releases discussed in this column are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada. The Month in Home Media is published on the first Thursday of each month.

May 2017 was another quiet month. Film Chest released all 39 episodes of syndicated crime drama Decoy (1957-1958) on DVD for the very first time. Also, Amazon Prime began streaming a half dozen episodes of The Adventures of Champion (CBS, 1955-1956).

DVD/Blu-ray Releases

Decoy: The Complete 39 Episode Series (TV Series, Film Chest, DVD)
Many public domain episodes of this syndicated one season wonder have been released by Alpha Video over the years. This is the first set to include all 39 episodes. The series originally aired during the 1957-1958 season. Beverly Garland starred as Casey Jones, a devoted police officer who often went undercover to catch bad guys. She impersonated an exotic dancer, a photographer, a prisoner at a women’s jail, a nurse, and an insurance agent, among others.

NOTE: VEI planned to release Nero Wolfe (NBC, 1981) on DVD last month but there seems to have been some sort of delay.

DVD/Blu-ray News

I missed this in April. Recent obscurity Emerald City, which ran on NBC for 10 episodes earlier this year, is coming to DVD on July 25th. Bonus features will include deleted scenes and a featurette about the series (TVShowsOnDVD.com).

Two other recent obscurities, APB and Chicago Justice, are also coming to DVD. No release dates have been announced yet. APB ran on FOX for 12 episodes earlier this year while Chicago Justice lasted 13 episodes on NBC (TVShowsOnDVD.com, TVShowsOnDVD.com).

Streaming

Amazon Prime began streaming six episodes of one season wonder The Adventures of Champion (aka Champion the Wonder Dog) last month. The half-hour Western ran for 26 episodes on CBS during the 1955-1956 season.
