Connecticut newspaper The Hartford Courant began publishing daily television listings alongside radio listings at least as early as July 1948. By the early 1950s, weekly television listings were included in The Courant Magazine. On Sunday, October 23rd, 1955, the newspaper began publishing a weekly standalone television supplement, originally titled The Courant TV Week but later shortened to simply TV Week.
Growing up in Connecticut, my family didn’t subscribe to TV Guide Magazine so we relied on TV Week to tell us what was on TV. For reasons I no longer remember, I started collecting issues of TV Week around the start of the 2000-2001 TV season. I’ve held on to them for more than two decades, always hoping to find a use for them. Eventually, I got around to scanning the covers and created this exhibit for Television Obscurities.
Below, you’ll see thumbnails to ever issue of TV Week published between October 1st, 2000 and May 6th, 2001–with one exception. Although I have the October 22nd, 2000 issue, it doesn’t have a cover. I don’t know why someone in my family removed it.
The covers showcase a wide range of programming: network sitcoms, dramas, movies, and specials; TV shows and specials on basic and premium cable channels; public television documentaries; and even a documentary series on C-SPAN. A handful of issues have short-lived TV shows on the cover: Gideon’s Crossing (NBC), FreakyLinks (FOX), and What About Joan (ABC).
Many of the covers feature advertisements for local Connecticut TV stations. Others have advertisements for telephone company SNET or Pools By Murphy & Sons.
