DVD Tuesday: Super Friends, Doctor Who

Every Tuesday I take a look at obscure and/or classic television programs, specials, miniseries or made-for-TV movies being released on DVD. For the record I consider anything broadcast prior to 1980 to be classic or else there wouldn’t be much to discuss. The releases referred to in these posts are encoded for Region 1 use in the United States and Canada.

It’s the first Tuesday of 2010, which means there are 51 to go. That’s a lot of DVD releases and some of them are sure to be of interest to fans of classic television and a few might even be considered obscure. Today you can pick up Super Friends: Season One, Vol. One from Warner Home Video. This is the original version of Super Friends, the Hanna-Barbera cartoon that ran for 16 episodes on ABC during the 1973-1974 season. This two-disc volume includes the first eight episodes with a run time of 352 minutes.

I’ve decided to start discussing new Doctor Who releases and there are two new stories out today from BBC Video. All of these releases have already been released in Region 2 (Europe, etc.) and Region 4 (Australia, etc.). One of them — Doctor Who: The Keys of Marinus (Story 5) — is from the very first season of the long-running series and stars William Hartnell as the very first doctor. The six-part story was originally broadcast from April to May of 1964. The second release — Doctor Who: The Twin Dilemma (Story 137) — is from the 21st season and features the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker). The four-part story first aired in March of 1984.
