getTV Adding Western TV Series

Digital specialty network getTV, which launched in February 2014 and until now was devoted mostly to movies, has announced it will branch into television next month with the addition of three Western TV shows: A Man Called Shenandoah (ABC, 1965-1966), Hondo (ABC, 1967), and Nichols (NBC, 1971-1972).

All three shows will launch in September with mini-marathons running from 12-5PM ET on consecutive Saturdays. Five episodes of Nichols will air on September 12th, followed by five episodes of Hondo on September 19th, and finally ten episode of A Man Called Shenandoah on September 26th. All three series will then join getTV’s regular Saturday lineup on a weekly basis.

Here’s an excerpt from a getTV press release:

“At getTV, our fans love when we dig into the vaults and find something they haven’t seen in awhile – or maybe ever. So, in addition to uncovering hard-to-find movies, we also wanted to deliver our fans some rare TV series,” said Jeff Meier, getTV’s senior vice president of programming. “One of our most popular programming blocks on the channel is our Saturday lineup of Westerns, so we’re especially proud to be able to present lesser known gems from legends like James Garner and Robert Horton that haven’t been seen on TV in decades. Although each of these series originally had a short run, they all feature classic Old West action that will have viewers agreeing that they were cancelled far too soon.”

A Man Called Shenandoah was at one point available for streaming through Warner Archive Instant but was removed earlier this year. It has never been released on DVD. Hondo has also never been released on DVD but is currently available through Warner Archive Instant. Nichols was released on DVD by Warner Archive in September 2013. It was available through Warner Archive Instant until recently.

By adding these shows, getTV joins the already crowded list of diginets that air classic TV shows, among them MeTV, Antenna TV, Cozi TV, This TV, and RetroTV. It’s good to see new shows added to the mix rather than yet another network airing the same big name shows.

getTV is currently available in close to 70% of the country. You can check to see if getTV is available in your area here.

  1. HONDO had a continuous ten year run on Saturday mornings on TNT from June 1989 to May 1999, pretty impressive with only 17 episodes available. The series had a loyal following and is almost certain to be released by Warner Archive on DVD at some point IMO.

  2. James Garner brought most of the writers and behind the scenes people from the cancelled NICHOLS to his new series: THE ROCKFORD FILES.
