Here’s something surprising (in a good way): prolific television writer/producer Leonard Stern has started a campaign to see his short-lived sitcom, I’m Dickens He’s Fenster, released on DVD. The series starred John Astin and Marty Ingels as best friends Harry Dickens and Arch Fenster. The pair work for a construction company as carpenters and get themselves into all manner of trouble. I’m Dickens He’s Fenster ran for 32 episodes during the 1962-1963 season and has rarely–if ever–been syndicated. When the show was still on the air, Dell published two comic books based on the series.
Yesterday, TVShowsOnDVD.com published a press release about the launch of a campaign to get the series released on DVD. An official website has been put together to rally support from fans of the show. From the press release, quoting Leonard Stern:
If we can get public support, hopefully I’m Dickens He’s Fenster will be released on DVD,” says Stern. “We truly believe that the series deserves to be preserved because it’s truly funny. Unfortunately, too many times there has been indifference to classic films of the past. There are too many of them that will never be seen again that were representative of remarkable funmaking.
I’m sure there are plenty of fans of classic television who would agree with Stern: I’m Dickens He’s Fenster does deserve a DVD release. CBS/Paramount owns the rights to “I’M DICKENS- HE’S FENSTER” because they acquired Spelling Entertainment, which acquired Worldvision, which HAD been “ABC Films” before 1971, who originally owned the series. If you want to see the it on DVD, tell THEM. But they’re too busy preparing new “box sets” of the “CSI” franchise, “NCIS”, “COLD CASE”, etc., to bother with a “forgotten” black and white series they’re SURE nobody wants to see….
