7:30 FACE THE NATION (CBS)
“Gideon’s Trumpet: The Poor Man and the Law” launches this series’ new season. The program documents the story of Clarence Earl Gideon, the ex-convict whose petition to the Supreme Court led to a new ruling establishing absolute right to counsel in a felony case. Gideon and the original participants are seen in a reenactment of his first trial. Others on the program include Florida state and prison officials; attorney Abe Fortas, who successfully argued the case before the Supreme Court; Florida Circuit Court judge Robert L. McCrary Jr.; and attorney W. Fred Turner, who defended Gideon in his second trial. Martin Agronsky reports. (60 min.)

VIRGINIAN (NBC)
[COLOR] “The Hero.” Debonair Eastern newspaperman James Templeton arrives at the Shiloh to do a feature story on Judge Garth, and he makes quite a hit with Betsy. (90 min.)

OZZIE AND HARRIET–Comedy (ABC)
Kris is counting on a romantic weekend with Rick at her folks’ mountain cabin, but Rick is more interested in a poker game with his fraternity buddies.

8:00 PATTY DUKE (ABC)
“Patty, the Organizer,” forms the UAFUM (The United Association for Unprotected Minors) so that she and Ross can get a raise in their allowances.

8:30 BEVERLY HILLBILLIES (CBS)
Jed’s anxious for people to start settling the town where he’s opened up a general store, but the “town” is a movie set at his new studio.

SHINDIG (ABC)
Host Jimmy O’Neil welcomes the Beatles. See the Close-up.

9:00 DICK VAN DYKE (CBS)
“The Lady and the Baby Sitter.” The Petries’ baby sitter is an unhappy teen-age boy who’s hopelessly in love with Laura.

MOVIE
Wednesday Night at the Movies: “See How They Run.” (1964) The father of three children is murdered after he collects evidence exposing a crooked international cartel. But the children unwittingly take the evidence along with them when they are sent to live with an aunt in the U.S.–with the underground organization in hot pursuit. This movie is part of the “project 120” series of feature films that will be distributed abroad after their TV premieres here. (Two hours)

MICKEY (ABC)
Buddy comes home from school with a black eye, and says it’s the result of a fight that he started. Nora: Emmaline Henry. Buddy: Brian Nash. Sammy: Sammee Tong. Timmy: Tim Rooney. Swidler: Alan Reed. Mike: Tim Matthieson.

9:30 CARA WILLIAMS (CBS)
Cara stumbles onto a hidden room at the office, where she finds a little old lady who is mistakenly listed in the files as an office machine. Cara: Cara Williams. Frank: Frank Aletter. Burkhardt: Paul Reed. Amelia Hofstetter: Una Merkel.

BURKE’S LAW–Mystery (ABC)
A shotgun blast ends the life of wealthy Lenore Wingfield–the day before she was going to change her will.

10:00 DANNY KAYE–Variety (CBS)
Danny’s guests are comedienne Imogene Coca and folk duo Joe and Eddie, who sing “Lonesome Road.” In a sketch, Danny presents his wife (Imogene) with another “classic” gift: huge lobster earrings. The entire company performs in the operetta “Naughty Gypsy Yetta.” Danny sings “No Strings.” Harvey Korman, Earl Brown singers, Tony Charmoli dancers. (60 min.)

10:30 POLITICS ’64 (ABC)
“Campaign Grind: the Candidates’ Eye View.” Edward P. Morgan reports on the campaigns of Democratic and Reupblican [sic] Vice Presidential candidates Sen. Hubert Humphrey and Rep. William E. Miller.

  1. “See How They Run” was, from what I’ve read in a few places, including Brooks & Marsh’s first tv encyclopedia, the first-ever movie made especially for tv, starting a trend that lasted at least 40 years.
